Purple isn’t a colour that sparks my stylistic nature into thinking about fashion and wardrobe wears. Infact, I don’t own a single purple item (Cadburys aside, of course) – not even a nail varnish in the hue.
Personal feelings aside, this season purple is the stand-out colour. Designers have embraced the shade in all its garish glory through a variety of luxe textures including brocade, velvet, satin and faux fur; This regal colour has unashamedly been approved from top-to-toe. Michael Kors teamed chunky lilac cable-knits with whimsical feathered skirts; Kenzo dipped his toe into the sea of bad taste with volumous leg o’mutton sleeves and high-waisted velvet trousers; and Miu Miu wrapped models in squeaky satins as if they were living versions of the Quality-Street sweets. All in all, purple reigns.
The question is, how can we take the catwalk to Conduit street without looking like one of The Muppets? Too much purple in an outfit can mean trouble, and so with that in mind, I’ve put together 5 ways to embrace the trend this season; from runway to reality.
