Who doesn’t like a good stripe? You can’t really doubt it can you. After all, it was introduced to fashion through the stylish eyes of Mademoiselle Chanel back in 1917, and who disagrees with Chanel? It’s certainly become an all time classic print that’s earned itself the worthy title ‘wardrobe essential’. Despite its nautical roots, the stripe does not abandon us in a sea of uncertainty, in-fact it’s probably one of the most reliable prints in our wardrobes to date. Try to think of another pattern as timeless. Leopard-print, no. Paisley, like the tide it comes and it go’s. Florals, they can be weather dependent. The stripe over-rides all. I felt it was time to deconstruct this line and create a style guide surrounding the print that has kept our wardrobes a-float for the last century. This season brands have paid homage to the long-lasting linear look, but can it beat the classic Chanel breton? Designers have combined bold colours, tested the proportions and played with textures; be it horizontal, vertical, pin-striped, or nautical, the line has taken on all forms this autumn winter. As far as styling goes, I’d suggest either wearing one staple striped piece and keeping the rest of your look clean, or going all out and teaming stripe upon stripe or contrasting it with (a carefully chosen) sports tee or floral print.
The stripe is an essential part of any wardrobe, but it can be hard to know how to make it feel fresh season after season. Here’s 10 ways to set sail in style this winter 😉 Make sure you head over to my Pinterest page to view my striped style board, just click here.
